About Us

The faculty and staff at The Loudoun School of Ballet (LSB) encourage excellence in dance education in a nurturing and caring atmosphere. From pre-school age to adult, and for the novice to the professional, LSB has a program designed for everyone who enjoys dance!

Students can follow a recreational dance path or train for a professional career. Classes offered at LSB begin at the Rising Stars (pre-school) level and advance through ten graded levels of classical ballet and jazz training. Additional electives build on the critical ballet and jazz technique and introduce other dance genres, including contemporary ballet, modern, contemporary, lyrical, commercial jazz, tap, Broadway, musical theatre, hip-hop, and core-feet strengthening. We also have an adult program open to dancers of all abilities.

The LSB faculty consists of accredited and award-winning instructors dedicated to the dancers and their individual goals. The training process helps the dancers build self-confidence, develop friendships, and adopt a healthy lifestyle. The faculty takes pride in offering the leading dance technique instruction in the region and introducing students to guest artists and master teachers, further enhancing artistic growth and technical training.

LSB is home to the Loudoun Ballet Performing Arts Company, a pre-professional ballet company, Loudoun Contemporary Dance Company, a pre-professional contemporary company, Loudoun TAPS!, and The Rising Stars Foundation.

Our custom-designed, 7,200-square-foot facility is located just east of historic Leesburg and offers ample parking. We have four studios, full-color monitors, and the latest security, health, and safety features.

LSB is open year-round. Classes offered in the summer months, June through August, include intensive technical study, performance camps, master classes, and workshops for students of all levels. The graded-level, school-year program runs from September to June.

What We Are About

Accomplishment

According to Merriam-Webster, accomplishment is "a special skill or ability acquired by training or practice." At LSB, our goal is to provide our students with excellent training to help them accomplish their personal goals. Our dancers continually inspire us with their goal setting and accomplishments!

Creativity

At LSB, we recognize that creativity - the ability to create - transcends dance. It is critical in every aspect of a dancer's life, particularly with problem-solving when navigating through adolescence. Our goal is to foster creativity so that our dancers can dig deep inside and find their creativity in all situations.

Community

The arts play a significant role in communities. Music, dance, theatre performances, and visual arts bring people together who otherwise might never cross paths. A positive shared experience - the newfound connection among the arts participants and supporters - lasts well beyond the art experience and unites a community. We at LSB are honored to be part of and to bring exceptional dance classes and performances to Loudoun County and Northern Virginia communities.

Our Curriculum

LSB's ballet and contemporary departments offer technique and elective classes in ballet, pointe, contemporary ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, contemporary, commercial jazz, Broadway, hip-hop, modern, and musical theatre for dancers ages six to adult. The Rising Stars program introduces the joys of music and movement and the fundamentals of dance technique to pre-school children, ages 18 months to five years.

Our dance classes focus on technique throughout the fall, winter, and spring, and student recitals are choreographed according to class syllabi, thus eliminating the need to "teach" a recital dance for the entire year. LSB is not a single method or an exam-driven school.  LSB is not a single method or an exam-driven school. Our accredited teachers are capable of presenting students for examinations in Vaganova (Russian), Cecchetti (Italian), and Royal (English) methods; however, we do not focus exclusively on one because dancers must be fluent in multiple methods and styles. Exam pressures also would conflict with LSB's stated goal of developing dance as a performing art.

The achievements of our dancers at prestigious dance competitions and their acceptances into collegiate and professional dance programs are testaments to the success of our curriculum. Advanced ballet students have the opportunity to attend a prestigious ballet competition annually to advance their ballet training and professional opportunities. Our ballet dancers have earned high placement and scholarships at the American Dance Competition/International Ballet Competition (ADC/IBC) and Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) competitions. Our Loudoun Contemporary Dance Company (LCDC) members consistently receive the highest honors for solo performances and group dances for their technique and artistry at industry conventions. LSB students pursuing dance in higher education are often awarded scholarships to elite colleges and universities; those going directly into professional dance programs receive acceptances and scholarships to internationally recognized ballet company training programs. We are very proud of our curriculum and our dancers' commitment to their art.
